How big is a 25-mile radius?

A circle with a 25-mile radius is 50 miles across, has a circumference of about 157 miles, and encloses roughly 1,963 square miles (5,085 km²). That is about the land area of Delaware (1,949 sq mi), or about a quarter larger than Rhode Island including its coastal water (1,545 sq mi). In a large metro area it typically covers the central city and most of its first and second ring of suburbs; in farm country it takes in a county seat and the small towns around it.

Twenty-five miles is the radius people reach for when they mean “local”: close enough to drive to without planning, far enough to cover a whole metro region. The map above starts with a 25-mile circle around downtown Denver. Search any address, click the map, or use your location to move the center; the area, perimeter and diameter update instantly.

The circle drawn here is geodesic: every edge point is exactly 25 miles from the center along the Earth's surface, measured on the WGS84 ellipsoid. At this size the difference from a flat circle is a fraction of a percent, but the tool uses the same method for a 2,000-mile circle, where it matters a lot.

How to draw a 25-mile radius on a map

  1. Set the center. Type an address, city or landmark into the search box and press Center Map, click anywhere on the map, or press Use Current Location.
  2. Keep the radius at 25 miles (it is preset on this page) or type another value. Switch to kilometers if you need a 40 km circle instead.
  3. Read the result. The headline shows the enclosed area; the cards below the map give acreage, perimeter and diameter. Copy the summary with the copy button.

To draw several circles, or compare 25 miles with a different distance, use the general radius map tool. For a 50-mile or 100-mile circle with notes specific to those sizes, see the 50-mile radius map and the 100-mile radius map.

How long does it take to drive 25 miles?

The circle measures straight-line distance, and roads are never straight. In the United States the road distance between two points is usually 20 to 40 percent longer than the straight line, more where rivers, lakes or mountains force detours. So a point on the edge of a 25-mile circle is typically 30 to 35 miles away by road.

  • Rural interstate or highway: about 30 to 40 minutes to the edge of the circle.
  • Suburban arterials with traffic lights: 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Dense metro at rush hour: often more than an hour; crossing 25 miles of Los Angeles, New York or Atlanta at 5 p.m. can take 90 minutes.

If what you really care about is time rather than distance, for example a 30-minute delivery promise, map a drive-time area instead. It follows the road network, so it bulges along highways and shrinks where roads are slow.

Real places about 25 miles apart

These city pairs are roughly 25 miles apart in a straight line (downtown to downtown), which gives a feel for the size of the circle. If you center the circle on the first city, the second sits close to the edge.

Check any pair yourself with the distance between cities calculator; the figures above use great-circle distance between city centers, so they will differ slightly from airport-to-airport or address-to-address numbers.

What a 25-mile radius is used for

Local delivery and service areas

Plumbers, HVAC companies, mobile dog groomers, caterers and furniture stores often define their service area as “within 25 miles of our shop”. It is large enough to cover a metro area and small enough that a technician can fit several calls into a day. Draw the circle around your address, then screenshot it for your website or quote form, and list the cities inside it with the cities within a radius finder.

Local search and advertising

Ad platforms let you target people within a radius of a location, and 25 miles is a common setting for a single-location business in a suburban market. Seeing the circle on a map shows you which neighboring towns you are paying to reach and whether a lake or state line takes a bite out of the useful area.

Job search, schools and housing

Job boards and real-estate sites default to “within 25 miles” for good reason: it approximates a tolerable daily commute in most US metros. Drawing the circle around your workplace (rather than your home) is a quick way to see which neighborhoods are worth searching.

Clubs, leagues and healthcare networks

Youth sports leagues, school districts that accept transfer students, and insurance network-adequacy rules frequently use distance thresholds in the 15 to 30 mile range. A 25-mile circle is a fast visual check of who qualifies, though the official rule may measure driving distance rather than a straight line.

25 miles in perspective

Twenty-five miles is just short of a marathon (26.2 miles). On foot at a steady 3 mph it is a full day's walk of a little over eight hours; on a bicycle at 12 to 15 mph it is roughly two hours of riding. By car on a clear highway it is barely half an hour. That spread is why the same radius can feel tiny to a delivery driver and enormous to a runner.

Compared with administrative areas, a 25-mile circle is a little under twice the size of an average US county. The 50 states and DC cover about 3.5 million square miles of land split among roughly 3,140 counties and county equivalents, an average of about 1,100 square miles each. In the East, where counties are small, a 25-mile circle typically touches five to ten of them; in the West a single county such as San Bernardino, California (over 20,000 square miles) can contain the whole circle.

Is an address within 25 miles?

To test one address against the circle, measure it directly with the distance between two places calculator: if the straight-line distance from the center is 25 miles or less, it is inside. For a whole list of addresses, plot them with the multiple-address map and compare the pins against the circle, or export their coordinates and compute distances in a spreadsheet. The edge of the circle is drawn with 72 vertices, so between vertices the line sits a hair inside the true circle; for points within a few hundred feet of the line, measure rather than eyeball.

Remember that a radius rule applies from a specific point. “Within 25 miles of the store” and “within 25 miles of the city” can give very different answers if the city is large, because the second has no single center. Decide on the exact center first, ideally a street address or a pair of coordinates, and write it down with the result.

ZIP codes within 25 miles

How many ZIP codes fit in a 25-mile radius depends entirely on where you are. Around Midtown Manhattan it is over 500; around Elko, Nevada it is two. The table counts ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (the Census Bureau's area version of ZIP codes) whose center point falls inside a 25-mile circle.

When a 25-mile circle is the wrong tool

A circle is a simplification. It ignores water, mountains, borders and road networks, and it treats every direction as equally reachable. Coastal cities are the classic example: a 25-mile circle around Miami or San Francisco is roughly half ocean, so the land area you can serve is much smaller than 1,963 square miles.

Limits of a 25-mile radius map
  • Straight-line distance only; driving distance to the edge is usually 20–40% longer.
  • The area figure includes water, parks and uninhabited land inside the circle.
  • Legal and contractual radius rules may specify driving miles or a particular measuring point; check the wording.
  • Map tiles are for reference; they are not a survey and do not show property or jurisdiction lines.

PRECISION & EXCEPTIONS

Edge cases and exceptions

Coastal and Lakeside Centers

A 25-mile circle around Miami or Chicago is partly water, so the usable land area is much less than 1,963 square miles.

Rush-Hour Metros

Crossing 25 miles of a large metro at peak time can take over an hour. Use a drive-time map when time matters more than distance.

Radius Rules With a Defined Measuring Point

Contracts and regulations may measure from a property line or by road. Check the wording before relying on a straight-line circle.

FIELD APPLICATIONS

The 25-mile radius map: worked examples

1

Service Area for a Plumbing Business

Scenario: A shop in Lakewood, Colorado wants to advertise a 25-mile service area.

Outcome: The circle covers most of the Denver metro, including Boulder at its northern edge, so the shop lists those cities on its website.

2

Job Search Within 25 Miles

Scenario: A commuter in Tacoma checks whether downtown Seattle is within 25 miles.

Outcome: The two downtowns are about 25 miles apart in a straight line, right on the edge of the circle, and roughly 33 miles by road.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions about the 25-mile radius map

How big is a 25-mile radius?

It is a circle 50 miles across with a circumference of about 157 miles, enclosing roughly 1,963 square miles (5,085 km²), close to the land area of Delaware.

How do I draw a 25-mile radius on a map?

Type an address or city into the search box and press Center Map, click the map, or use your current location. The radius is preset to 25 miles on this page.

How long does it take to drive 25 miles?

About 30 to 40 minutes on an open highway, 45 minutes to an hour on suburban roads, and longer in rush-hour traffic. The edge of the circle is usually 30 to 35 road miles away.

How many ZIP codes are within 25 miles?

It depends on density: about 510 around Midtown Manhattan, 184 around the Chicago Loop, 110 around downtown Denver and only 2 around Elko, Nevada, counting ZIP areas whose center is inside the circle.

How do I get a list of ZIP codes within 25 miles of a ZIP code?

Use the find ZIP codes in a radius tool, enter the ZIP code or address, and set the radius to 25 miles. It lists each ZIP with its distance and exports CSV.

Is a 25-mile radius the same as a 25-mile drive?

No. The radius is straight-line distance. Roads add 20 to 40 percent on average, so a 25-mile drive reaches a smaller area than the circle.

How many acres are in a 25-mile radius?

About 1.26 million acres (1,963 square miles times 640 acres per square mile).

What is 25 miles in kilometers?

25 miles is 40.23 kilometers. Switch the unit toggle to kilometers to draw a 40 km circle instead.

Which cities are about 25 miles apart?

Seattle and Tacoma (25.0 miles), Miami and Fort Lauderdale (25.2), Denver and Boulder (24.2) and Boston and Lowell (23.0), measured in a straight line between downtowns.

What is a 25-mile radius used for?

Local delivery and service areas, local ad targeting, job and housing searches, youth sports leagues and healthcare network checks.

Can I draw a 25-mile radius around my current location?

Yes. Press Use Current Location and allow location access in your browser. The circle is drawn around your device position.

Why does the circle look slightly oval?

The base map uses Web Mercator, which stretches north-south distances away from the equator. The circle itself is exactly 25 miles from the center in every direction on the ground.

How many people live within 25 miles?

From about 16,000 around Elko, Nevada to over 14 million around Midtown Manhattan. For your own center, use the population within a radius calculator.

Can I see which cities are within 25 miles?

Yes. Use the cities in a radius tool with the same center and a 25-mile radius to get a list of towns sorted by distance.

Is 25 miles a reasonable commute?

For most US metros, yes. Twenty-five straight-line miles is typically a 35 to 60 minute drive, which is why job boards default to that distance.

How accurate is the circle?

Each edge point is computed on the WGS84 ellipsoid, so it is 25 miles from the center to well under a meter. Accuracy of the center depends on how precisely the address was geocoded.
