Why the Answer Near a Border Often Surprises You
Administrative lines rarely follow straight geometric paths. Here are four verified real-world edge cases where naive maps produce errors:
The Four Corners Monument
The only place in the United States where four states meet: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. Stepping across the brass marker shifts state jurisdiction, state income tax liability, and sales tax regulations within inches.
Indiana & Nebraska Split-Zone Counties
Under federal regulation 49 CFR Part 71, five U.S. counties are formally split between two time zones. In Cherry County, Nebraska, crossing an invisible survey line shifts local time by an entire hour.
Multi-State Postal Delivery ZIPs
ZIP codes are carrier mail routes, not geographic land boundaries. ZIP code 73949 serves addresses in both Texas and Oklahoma. Relying on ZIP codes for state or tax determinations frequently causes jurisdiction errors.
GPS Altitude vs. True Sea Level
Smartphone GPS chips report geodetic height above the mathematical WGS84 ellipsoid. Due to Earth’s uneven gravitational field, your orthometric height above the geoid (true sea level) can differ by 50 to 150 feet.
Empirical Cartographic Studies
U.S. Split-Time-Zone Counties: The Five Official Boundary Divisions
An audit of all 3,143 U.S. counties against Department of Transportation rulemaking. We document the precise legal survey lines dividing Cherry (NE), Malheur (OR), Elko (NV), Idaho (ID), and McKenzie (ND).
Geodesic vs. Haversine Distortion: Why Polar Calculations Fail
Empirical distortion matrix proving that spherical Haversine shortcuts underestimate distance by up to -0.55% (+2.75 miles per 500 miles) in polar latitudes while overestimating at the Equator.
How Open Map Lab calculates your results
Math runs in your browser
Distance, area, bearing and sun or moon positions are calculated on your device on the WGS84 ellipsoid. State, county and country boundary tests run locally from bundled boundary files.
Public datasets
US Census Bureau cartographic boundaries and TIGERweb, Natural Earth, tz-lookup time zone polygons and the Copernicus GLO-90 elevation model. Boundaries are generalized, so results very close to a line can differ from survey-grade data.
Public validation
Our validation page checks the calculations against published geodesic benchmark values. See the methodology for details.
Frequently asked questions about our free map tools
Are these map tools really free?
Yes. All 74 map tools and 114 printable blank maps are free to use with no account, no sign-up and no usage limits.
Is my GPS location stored or logged on your servers?
No. When you tap a "find my location" button, your coordinates are processed in your browser. Distance, area and boundary math runs on your device. Address searches and some boundary lookups are sent to OpenStreetMap-based geocoders (Photon, Nominatim) or the US Census TIGERweb service to get an answer, but Open Map Lab does not keep a database of user locations.
Why does my smartphone time zone sometimes switch near state borders?
Phones usually take local time from the mobile network. Near a county or state line that divides two time zones, your phone can connect to a tower on the other side and show that zone even though you have not crossed the line.
How accurate is browser-based geolocation on phones versus computers?
On phones with satellite positioning and a clear view of the sky, accuracy is typically 3 to 10 meters (10 to 33 feet). Laptops and desktops without GPS fall back on Wi-Fi or IP-based location, which can be off by 20 meters to several miles.
What datasets power Open Map Lab tools?
US Census Bureau cartographic boundary files (2017, generalized 1:10,000,000) for states and counties, Census TIGERweb for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas and places, Natural Earth for countries, time zone polygons from the tz-lookup library with offsets from your browser, and the Copernicus GLO-90 elevation model (about 90 m) via Open-Meteo for elevation.
What is the difference between a ZIP code and a Census ZCTA?
A ZIP code is a set of USPS mail delivery routes and has no official land area. A ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) is a generalized land polygon the Census Bureau builds for statistics. Some ZIP codes, such as PO box-only and military codes, have no ZCTA.
Can I use Open Map Lab results for legal, property or flight purposes?
No. The tools are for reference and education. Property lines and boundary disputes need a licensed land surveyor, flood insurance needs a FEMA Elevation Certificate, and flight planning must use official aeronautical charts.
Why do straight-line distances differ between mapping apps?
Many sites use the spherical haversine formula, which treats Earth as a perfect sphere. Open Map Lab uses Charles Karney's geodesic method on the WGS84 ellipsoid, which avoids errors of up to about 0.5% from the sphere shortcut.
Can I print a blank map?
Yes. The blank map library has 114 printable outline maps of the world, continents, the United States, every US state and many countries, which you can print or download as PNG or SVG.
How do I report a factual error or boundary discrepancy?
Email [email protected] with the page, what looks wrong and a source if you have one. The corrections page explains how reports are reviewed.
Open Map Lab is maintained by a small independent editorial team. Tell us about an outdated boundary or a wrong result.
