How to use the world time zone map

  1. 1Select a city worldwide

Pick one of 42 cities or search a place to snap to the nearest city.

  2. 2Compare offsets west to east

Cities are colored by UTC offset, including half-hour zones and UTC+14.

  3. 3Confirm DST and the exact zone

Check the DST status and IANA zone name, then use the Time Zone Finder for a specific address.

How do world time zones work?

Every civil clock is defined as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). In theory the Earth turns 15 degrees of longitude per hour, giving 24 bands. In practice governments draw zones to suit trade, politics and geography, so the real map has well over 35 distinct offsets in use.

The map above shows reference cities on every inhabited continent, each colored by its current UTC offset. The table underneath lists them west to east with live local time. Click a marker or a row to make it the headline answer, or search any town to see its nearest reference city. For one precise place, the time zone finder looks up the exact IANA zone.

Half-hour, 45-minute and UTC+14 time zones

Not every zone is a whole hour from UTC. India uses UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45, and parts of Australia UTC+9:30 and UTC+8:45. At the far end, Kiribati's Line Islands use UTC+14, the first place to see each new calendar day, while Baker and Howland Islands sit at UTC-12 almost a full day behind.

These jumps come from the International Date Line, which is not a straight meridian but a zigzag that keeps countries on one side of the calendar. The prime meridian marks the origin of the offsets.

When do countries change their clocks?

Daylight saving rules differ, and the gap between two cities can shift by an hour for a few weeks each spring and autumn when one switches and the other has not yet.

  • United States and Canada: second Sunday in March to first Sunday in November.
  • European Union and UK: last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October (clocks move at 01:00 UTC).
  • Australia (southern states): first Sunday in October to first Sunday in April. Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia skip DST.
  • New Zealand: last Sunday in September to first Sunday in April.
  • Brazil, Japan, China, India, Russia: no DST at present.

Planning across these gaps is easier with the time difference calculator. To see which half of the planet is currently in daylight, open the day and night map.

GOVERNING MATHEMATICAL EQUATIONLocal Time(B) = Local Time(A) + (Offset(B) - Offset(A))
VARIABLE DEFINITIONS & CONSTANTS
Offset:Current UTC offset including DST (hours)
WORKED BENCHMARK: A 3:00 P.M. CALL IN LONDON IN JULY, JOINING FROM MUMBAI
London offset (BST) = UTC+1Mumbai offset (IST) = UTC+5:30
  1. Difference = 5.5 - 1 = 4.5 hours
  2. 3:00 p.m. + 4 h 30 min = 7:30 p.m.
Computed Result:7:30 p.m. India Standard Time

In winter London is on UTC+0, so the same 3:00 p.m. call lands at 8:30 p.m. in Mumbai because India does not change its clocks.

How accurate is this world time zone map?

Read before relying on it
  • Markers are reference cities, not zone polygons. Countries with several zones, such as Russia, Brazil and Canada, need a city in each region.
  • Clicking the map picks the nearest listed city; it is an approximation for places far from any marker.
  • Values are computed live from your browser's IANA data. Governments change rules at short notice, so confirm anything critical.

PRECISION & EXCEPTIONS

Edge cases and exceptions

Daylight Saving Dates Differ

The US, EU and southern hemisphere countries switch on different dates, so the gap between two cities can change by an hour for a few weeks each spring and autumn.

Countries With Many Zones

Russia has 11 zones and the US, Canada, Brazil and Australia span several. One marker cannot represent a whole country.

Zones Without DST Near the Equator

Most countries near the equator do not change clocks, so their offset is fixed all year while others shift around them.

FIELD APPLICATIONS

The world time zone map: worked examples

1

London to Mumbai Call

Scenario: A 3:00 p.m. call in London in July.

Outcome: London is UTC+1 and Mumbai UTC+5:30, so the call is at 7:30 p.m. in Mumbai.

2

Trans-Pacific Flight

Scenario: Departing Tokyo at 6:00 p.m. on Monday and flying about 9 hours to Los Angeles.

Outcome: You land at about 11:00 a.m. the same Monday, hours earlier on the clock than you took off, because Los Angeles is 16 hours behind Tokyo in summer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions about the world time zone map

How many time zones are there in the world?

There are 24 nominal hourly zones, but because of half-hour, 45-minute and date-line offsets, more than 35 different UTC offsets are in use.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time is the global time standard that civil time zones are defined against. It does not change for daylight saving.

What is the difference between UTC and GMT?

GMT is the old mean solar time at Greenwich. UTC is the atomic-clock version that replaced it for most uses. They are within a second of each other.

Why do some countries use half-hour offsets?

Countries pick offsets for political and practical reasons. India (UTC+5:30), Iran (UTC+3:30), Afghanistan (UTC+4:30) and Newfoundland (UTC-3:30) all use half-hour offsets.

Where is the earliest time zone?

UTC+14, used on the Line Islands of Kiribati. It is the first place to start each new day.

Which countries do not use Daylight Saving Time?

Most of the world, including China, Japan, India, Russia, Brazil and most of Africa and Asia. The US, Canada, the EU, the UK and much of Australia and New Zealand do.

When do Europe and the US change their clocks?

The EU and UK change on the last Sundays in March and October. The US changes on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, so for a few weeks the gap shifts by an hour.

Is this a map of time zone boundaries?

No. It shows 42 reference cities with live times. Clicking the map selects the nearest listed city. For an exact zone at an address, use the time zone finder.

Why is China in one time zone?

China adopted a single national time, UTC+8 (Beijing time), in 1949, even though the country spans about five geographic zones.

How do I compare two cities directly?

Use the time difference calculator, which shows both clocks side by side with overlapping business hours.

How are the times computed?

They come from the IANA time zone database via your browser, so they include current daylight saving rules and refresh every 15 seconds.
