Corrections Policy & Change Log

Maps and calculators are only useful when they are right. If something on Open Map Lab is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and record the fix here.

How to report an error

Email [email protected] with the page URL, what you saw, what you expected, and (for a wrong result) the exact coordinates or address you entered. A screenshot helps. We never need your name or location history.

What we correct, and how

  • Calculation errors (distance, bearing, area, coordinate conversion): reproduced against the benchmarks on the validation page, fixed, and added as a regression case.
  • Boundary or data errors (county, time zone, ZIP, elevation): traced to the source dataset and vintage. If the source is wrong we say so on the page; if our processing is wrong we fix it.
  • Written content errors (FAQs, guides, edge cases): checked against primary sources listed on the sources page and corrected in place.
  • Material corrections change the page's "Updated" date and are listed in the log below. Typo fixes are not logged.

Change log

  1. 2026-10-13

Boundary, time zone and elevation engine corrections

Replaced bounding-box time zone and state lookups with polygon lookups (IANA zone polygons; Census state, county and Natural Earth country boundaries). Distances to borders are now measured to the real polygon edge instead of fixed placeholder values. ZIP outlines come from Census ZCTAs via TIGERweb, and county outlines from Census boundaries instead of drawn circles. The home page locator now reads live elevation. Source descriptions that overstated data vintage or scale were corrected.

  2. 2026-10-30

FAQ, schema and internal-link overhaul across all tool pages

Every tool page now carries at least ten tool-specific FAQs, per-tool structured data and meta text, and a typed set of next-step, sibling, guide, study and state links. Added the US Time Zone Map, World Time Zone Map and Elevation Profile tools.

  3. 2026-09-22

    SEO metadata standardization

Titles shortened to fit search result limits; deprecated meta keywords removed; GPS coordinate converter links corrected and redirected.

  4. 2026-09-19

    Dataset verification pass

Reviewed which boundary, elevation and time zone sources the tools rely on.
